A weld neck flanges (also referred to as a high-hub flange and tapered hub flange) is a sort of flange. There are two designs. The regular type is employed with pipes. The long type is unsuitable for pipes and it is used in process plant.

A welding neck flange consists of a circular fittings with a protruding rim around the circumference. Generally machined from a forging, these Weld Neck flanges are typically butt welded to a pipe. The rim features a series of drilled holes that let the flange to be affixed to a different flange with bolts. The long tapered hub provides a crucial reinforcement to be used in several applications involving high, sub-zero and / or elevated temperatures. The graceful transition from Weld Neck flange thickness to pipe or fitting wall thickness effected by the taper is beneficial, under conditions of repeated bending, caused by line expansion or other variable forces.

These Weld Neck Flanges are bored to match the within diameter of the mating pipe or fitting so there’ll be no restriction of product flow. This prevents turbulence at the joint and reduces erosion. They also provide excellent stress distribution through the tapered hub and are easily radiography for flaw detection. This flange type are going to be welded to a pipe or fitting with one full penetration, V weld (Butt weld).

Weld neck pipe flanges are typically given a raised face, flat face, or RTJ facing. When a raised face is important for weld neck pipe flanges, the quality height is 1/16” for weld neck pipe flanges under 400#. Disadvantages of Weld Neck Flanges

  • Welding Neskills:
  • The installation of these flanges do require the skills if a more advanced welder. The inside of the connection needs to be smooth to reduce friction in the flow of material. The outside weld also needs to pass a certain criteria that is determined by certain codes. Installation of the butt flanges need to be left to the more skilled and trained welder.

  • Leak occurrences:
  • Despite the installation techniques that well trained welders use each connection has to pass a radiography test. When the tests are complete and the weld is sufficient there could still be air bubbles in the weld that the test did not detect. Over time these bubbles will develop leaks. Regardless of the welder’s skill set these bubbles occur and leaks will develop over time. These leaks can be repaired without replacing the entire flange.
