Stainless steels are referred to as high-alloy steels. They need excellent corrosion resistance as compared with the other steel as they contain chromium. Supported their crystalline structure, stainless steels are divided into three groups, namely, martensite, authentic and ferritic steels. A mixture of martensite and ferritic steels forms a fourth group referred to as precipitation-hardened steels. The grade 446 stainless steel is a ferritic, non-heat treatable stainless steel that gives good resistance to heat oxidation and corrosion. The grade 446 stainless steel will be easily welded using most of the normal methods except oxyacetylene welding. Type 308 welding material are often used if required, but it’ll not exhibit scaling resistance equal to the bottom metal. Differences in coefficient of thermal expansion of a base and weld metal has to be taken into consideration.
