A Steel Pipes is a round tubular to distribute fluids, and gases, designated by nominal pipe size (NPS) that represent a rough indication of the pipes conveyance capacity. Pipe is a hollow section with round cross section for the conveyance of products. The products include fluids, gas, pellets, powders. The foremost important dimensions for a pipe is the outer diameter (OD) alongside the wall thickness (WT). OD minus 2 times WT (SCHEDULE) determine the within diameter (ID) of a pipe, which determines the liquid capacity of the pipe.
Pipes are normally want to transport gasses or liquids making it is important to understand the capacity. Knowing what quantity can flow through the pipe is essential. The circular shape of the Steel pipe make it efficient when handling pressure from the liquid flowing through.
A Tube is a round, rectangular, squared or oval hollow section measured by outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness (WT), expressed in inches or millimeters. The Tube refers to round, square, rectangular, and oval hollow sections that are used for pressure equipment, for mechanical applications, and for instrumentation systems. Tubes are indicated with outer diameter and wall thickness, in inches or in millimeters.
Tubing is used in structural applications therefore the outside diameter becomes an important dimension. Tubes are often put into applications like medical devices that need precise outside diameters. The surface diameter is very important since it’ll indicate what quantity it can hold as a stability factor.

Seamless Pipes & Tubes
Seamless Pipe as the name suggests is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint in contrast to Seam pipe. During a Seam pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker a part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint. Whereas the seamless pipe doesn’t have any such joint and thus has uniform structure & strength everywhere on the pipe body. Seamless Pipe can withstand higher pressure, higher mechanical stress & corrosive atmospheres and find wide application in Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, Fertilizer applications.
A Seamless Tube is a tube that doesn’t have any welding seam. The seamless tube will ideally be a solid metal tube with each end connected to a different tube without having any welding joint. These tubes have threads either at one end or at both ends and might be threaded to the top of another hollow tube. The presence of any seamless tube acts as a liability, however, if the tube is seamless, it tends to be solid and overcome various industrial forces and pressures while operational.
Welded Pipes & Tubes
Welded Pipe is one pipe the surface has the steel pipe joint, Which is used the steel belt or plate material through the bending deformation into round, square then welded into shapes. Welded Pipe for conveying water, sewage, gas, air, heating, steam, and other low pressure fluids.
A Welded Tube is produced through roll forming strips or sheets of chrome steel into a tube shape then welding the seam longitudinally. Welded tubing are often accomplished either by hot forming and cold forming processes. Of the 2, cold forming leads to smoother finishes and tighter tolerances. However, each method creates a durable, strong, steel tube that resists corrosion. The welded tube also can be drawn almost like seamless tubing to supply a finer weld seam with better surface finishes and tighter tolerances.
ERW Pipes
ERW Pipes are manufactured by cold forming of Steel Coil into a round cylindrical shapes. ERW Pipe have a Welded Joints in its cross sections. Within the initial times it had been through with the low frequency. Current to heat the sides. The low frequency process changed to high frequency. Current to supply a better quality weld. ERW Pipe have various applications like fencing, scaffolding, Line Pipe. ERW Steel Pipes are available in various diameters, thickness, finish and grade.
Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) IS:1239 steel pipes / tubes during a size range of 1/2 inch (ca. 5 cm) N.B. to 6 inch (ca. 15 cm) N.B. within the Light, Medium and Heavy classes. The nomenclature ERW refers to a particular sort of welding process that involves both spot and seam welding. Seam welding is usually used during the manufacturing of round, square, and rectangular steel tubing. The material utilized in the manufacturing process is usually SAE 1010.
What is the difference between Pipes and Tubes?
Pipe vs Tube | Steel Tubes | Steel Pipes |
---|---|---|
Key Dimensions | The most important dimensions for a steel tube are the outside diameter (OD) and the wall thickness (WT). These parameters are expressed in inches or millimeters and express the true dimensional value of the hollow section. | The most important dimensions for a pipe is the outer diameter (OD) together with the wall thickness (WT). OD minus 2 times WT (SCHEDULE) determine the inside diameter (ID) of a pipe, which determines the liquid capacity of the pipe. The NPS does not match the true diameter, it is a rough indication |
Types of Pipes and Tubes | Round, rectangular, square, oval | Round only |
Production range | A narrower range for tubing (up to 5 inches), larger for steel tubes for mechanical applications | Extensive (up to 80 inches and above) |
Wall Thickness | The wall thickness of a steel tube is expressed in inches or millimeters. For tubing, the wall thickness is measured also with a gage nomenclature. | The thickness of a steel pipe is designated with a “Schedule” value (the most common are Sch. 40, Sch. STD., Sch. XS, Sch. XXS). Two pipes of different NPS and same schedule have different wall thicknesses in inches or millimeters. |
Tolerances and strength | Steel tubes are produced to very strict tolerances. Tubulars undergo several dimensional quality checks, such as straightness, roundness, wall thickness, surface, during the manufacturing process. Mechanical strength is a major concern for tubes. | Tolerances are set, but rather loose. Strength is not the major concern. |
Delivery time | Generally longer | Can be short |
Material | Tubing is available in carbon steel, low alloy, stainless steel, and nickel-alloys; steel tubes for mechanical applications are mostly of carbon steel | A wide range of materials is available |
Production Process | Tubes manufacturing is more lengthy and laborious | Pipes are generally made to stock with highly automated and efficient processes, i.e. pipe mills produce on a continuous basis and feed distributors stock around the world. |
Market Cost | Higher due to lower mills productivity per hour, and due to the stricter requirements in terms of tolerances and inspections | Relatively lower price per ton than steel tubes |
End Connections | Threaded and grooved ends are available for quicker connections on site | The most common are beveled, plain and screwed ends |
