Threaded Fittings joints probably represent the oldest method of joining piping systems. Threaded Fittings are mainly used for little pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller. The dimension standards for taper pipe threads are given in ASME B1.20.1. That document gives all required dimensions including number of threads pitch diameter, per inch, and normal engagement lengths for all pipe diameters. Threaded Piping is usually utilized in low-cost, noncritical applications like domestic water, fire protection, and industrial cooling water systems. Screwed Threaded Forged Fittings are normally made from cast gray or malleable iron, cast brass or bronze, or forged alloy and steel. They’re available in three pressure ratings: Class 2000, 3000 and 6000. The Screwed Fitting may be a pipe fitting installed between two lengths of pipe or tube allowing a change of direction, usually 90° or 45°. The ends are often be machined for screwed (usually female), When the 2 ends differ in size, it’s called a Reducing or Reducer. Screwed pipe and It’s mating fittings will have threads that are either male or female. Male threads are dig the surface of a pipe or fitting, whereas female threads are turn over the within of the fitting.

What is NPT Screwed / Threaded Fittings
All Screwed / Threaded Fittings are given NPT thread, ASME B1.20.1. The American National Pipe Thread Tapered, is that the best known and most generally used connection where the pipe thread provides both the mechanical joint and therefore the hydraulic seal. NPT features a tapered male and feminine thread which seals with Teflon® tape or jointing compound.

Advantages of Screwed / Threaded Fittings
- Installation productivity is moderately high, and specialized installation skill requirements aren’t extensive.
- Leakage integrity is good for low-pressure, low-temperature installations where vibration isn’t encountered.
Disadvantages of Screwed / Threaded Fittings
- Rapid temperature changes may cause leaks thanks to differential thermal expansion between the pipe and fittings.
- Vibration may end in fatigue failures of screwed pipe joints because of the high stress intensification effects caused by the sharp notches at rock bottom of the threads.
- In hazardous piping systems threaded fittings connections should be avoided. Their vulnerability to fatigue damage is critical, specially where exposed threads are subject to corrosion.
Screwed / Threaded Joint
Threaded Connection, A joining of parts by means of threads. Threaded joints are the foremost common sort of releasable connections, which employ various fastenings to make sure relative immobility of the joined elements of machines and mechanisms. Threaded joints usually use fastenings, like bolts, screws, and nuts. The strength and sturdiness of threaded joints depend upon the planning of parts, precision of manufacture, and engineering factors. Threaded joints with taper thread are the sort most generally wont to join pipes, since this sort of thread gives the joints the required air tightness.
ASME B16.11 Thread Styles
These Five Series (X, K, B, C, D) of tube connectors with threads. Available threads include :
- 10-32 UNF
- 1/4 – 28 UNF
- 1/16 – 27 NPT
- 1/8 – 27 NPT
- 5 x .8
- 6 x 1
The “X” Thread
X Thread Series components have a tapered 10-32 Thread that functions sort of Pipe Thread. As compared to plain 10-32 UNF Threaded Fittings, the tapered design works better with oversized ports and ports which aren’t perpendicular to the face of the component. The 120° chamber under the hex provides a seal when the fitting is tightened into a port with a countersink as shown below. It also seals on the thread thanks to interference on the pitch diameter. When using an elbow or tee, the tapered thread tightens radially, and facilitates directional alignment of the barb.
Other Thread Fittings
Our K, B, C and D Series fittings, designed to be used with 10-32 UNF ports, are straight-threaded components. These fittings seal against the 120 degree chamber under the hex on the fitting, and don’t tighten radially as they’re assembled. Our S Series Threaded Fittings are straight threaded components for 1/4-28 UNF ports, our M5 Series are for M5 x .8 ports and our M6 Series are for M6 x 1 ports.
ASME B16.11 Forged Threaded Pipe Fittings Features
The Features shown here must be incorporated into the port, when using our B, C, D, X, K, S, M5 and M6 Series fittings (see chart below). Failure to try to do so will jeopardize the performance of the seal between the fitting and port. For applications during which this seal is very critical, we recommend that you simply contact a sealant specialist.

Schedule 80 Threaded Fittings / Schedule 40 Threaded Fittings.
Don’t use Schedule 80 Threaded Fittings during a Schedule 40 Threaded Fittings System. Do use an equivalent Schedule Threaded Fittings with equivalent schedule Pipe and Fittings.
Many plastic piping system installers who encounter problems with splitting assume Schedule 40 Threaded Fittings are weak. They conclude that the matter are often solved by switching to “stronger” Schedule 80 Threaded Fittings. There are several fallacies during this reasoning.
First, all the issues inherent in over-tightening apply the maximum amount to Sch 80 systems as they are doing Sch 40. While the walls of female Schedule 80 Threaded Fittings are thicker, wall thickness doesn’t change stress and strain levels.
Second, installers believe Schedule 80 systems are stronger because they need higher pressure ratings than Schedule 40 systems. This is often true only comparing systems with components that are cemented alongside solvent. Introduce even one PVC threaded pipe or nipple, and therefore, the rating of the whole system must be reduced by 50 percent.

Brief Introduction to Thread Standards
When selecting a pipe, fitting, or nozzle, you’ll notice that they need different threads at their ends. Measuring their sizes won’t guarantee you of finding the proper match to the component you’re getting to connect them to. this is often where thread standards is available. Whether you’re trying to find a male or female thread, tapered, or parallel, the codes are going to be different counting on your location. Countries follow different standards, and that they have different dimensions. Learning what threads are and therefore, the different thread standards will assist you find the precise thread match for your project.
What Are Screw Threads?
Screw threads, or just threads, are designed to attach components together. They need helical structures for converting linear and rotational force or movement. They’re ridges covered around a cone or cylinder. The male or external thread is the helical thread wrapped around a cone or cylinder that you simply can find in screws, bolts, and studs. You’ll find the feminine or internal thread in one among the components, like tapped holes and nuts, which will hook up with one another.
Importance of Thread Standards?
The main purpose of the standardization of threads is to ensure compatibility and effective maintenance and repair. By finding the precise match, tight sealing is guaranteed that eliminates the prospect of any leaking.
Common Standards of Thread in Different Areas
- ISO Metric Screw Threads
- Unified Thread Standard – UTS
- American National Standard Pipe Thread
- American National Pipe Tapered – NPT
- American National Standard Pipe Straight – NPS
- British Standard Pipe – BSP
- BSP Parallel (BSPP)
- BSP Tapered (BSPT)
How to Identify Different Threads
- Identify the Fitting’s Gender
- Check If the Threads Are Parallel or Tapered
- Identify the Size of the Threads
- Determine the Pitch
- Determine the Thread Standard
